So goes the song -- so goes the sentiment! That old Victoria High School "pride" is still flourishing in the hearts and memories of those who trod its hallowed halls for over half a century.

The school was led by eleven principals, beginning with C. E. Koonz and ending with R. C. Elkins who filled in during the last half of the final year so that Principal J. W. Thweatt could move on to Lunenburg's new consolidated high school.

VHS began as a single, two-story brick structure that outgrew its capacity as enrollment increased after WWI . In 1922, the campus acquired a second large brick building -- the white-columned one still standing at 8th Street and Lee Avenue that most think of as the Victoria High School. It is to this building that hundreds of alumni flock every spring for a grand reunion. Former students, teachers, and staff get together, reminisce, and share precious little pieces of "days gone by."

The beloved old school survived the wrecking ball several years ago thanks to the Town of Victoria and the VHS Preservation Foundation. Victoria High School continues to undergo renovations which are giving it new life. It is now listed on both the state and national registers of historic places -- enduring in body and spirit as a monument to those it served.

This wonderfully written and historically accurate tribute to our beloved VHS was contributed by Jane Gatling Atkinson, class of '62. And, because of her superb writing skills, and  exceptional historical knowledge of VHS and our town of Victoria, Virginia, I have appointed her as the Web Site Historian.
